The Proper Handling Of Tools - Woodworking Chisels

!9#: The Proper Handling Of Tools - Woodworking Chisels

Firmer Chisel

There are a number of forms of chisels, but the only two classes you will probably ever be in need of are the firmer and framing chisels. The former are intended for hand use only, while the latter are used for heavier work, such as mortising, where it becomes necessary to use the mallet.

In using a Firmer chisel, the work should be placed in the vise or be otherwise held in position, that both hands may be kept upon the tool, the right hand grasping the upper end of the handle and doing the pushing, while the left hand holds the lower part of the handle and acts as a guide in working it.

Paring with the chisel consists in trimming a piece of wood to a given line. It is an operation very often resorted to in finishing the end of a piece of work instead of planing, and in trimming up a curved edge. Here the line misrepresents the line of the finished end of a piece of work. The board is first placed in a vise and the wood removed to about one-quarter inch with a compass-saw, following the curve of the line as nearly as possible. Then lay the piece upon the bench-hook and pare to the line with the chisel.

The chisel is often used to pare down the surface of a piece of work to a given line.

Framing Chisel

The Framing chisel should be held in the left hand, and the blows dealt upon the handle with the mallet in the right hand. In handling the framing chisel the bevel of the blade should be toward the work. Unless this is done the chisel will not cut down squarely but will cut in under, as it cannot be guided as easily as the firmer-chisel can, with both hands to hold it.

Chamfering and Bevelling are somewhat similar operations. They consist in cutting the edges of a piece of wood.

The corner of a block of wood is very often chamfered, when planing end-wood, to prevent the wood from splintering. It can only be done, of course, before the adjoining side has been planed up, that a square corner can be obtained again when the work is finished.

The Gouge is a chisel with a curved section, its use being for cutting grooves and curvatures in a piece of work where the chisel cannot be employed.

A Draw-knife is very handy for quickly reducing the size of material and in rounding sticks. The blade is drawn toward you instead of being pushed as in the case of a plane or chisel.

Effects Of Technology And High-Tech Gadgets In Our Lives

!9#: Effects Of Technology And High-Tech Gadgets In Our Lives

Technology is the energy that drives our lives. It runs in the veins of society. Technology is related with innovation and creativity. It transforms ideas and thoughts into reality and into something that is helpful to society and human life. It has brought luxury and benefit to an average person's life. The level of automation that technology has brought about has saved time and human effort to a great extent. It has simplified the access to information and brought distant places closer.

Technology has automated crucial industrial as well as household processes. The gadgets have penetrated into our homes and have saved us from household chores. Now machines are executing various mundane jobs that once were carried out by human workers. Technology has evolved to such an extent that the machines can do tasks that are physically unapproachable by man.

Comparing the current ways of carrying out tasks with the ways they were performed in the past, we recognize how much the world has changed because of the technology revolution. Technology has enabled us to perform the same tasks with spending less time allowing us to do various other things. It is simply impossible to point out a specific technology for these drastic changes in a person's life. The level of technological advancement helps measure the economic growth of a nation.

The most remarkable technological gadget is a mobile phone. Cellular communication has revolutionized the telecommunication industry. The conventional phone, also a piece of technology, was one of the earliest technological developments. Now, smartphones have broadened the scope of communication which is not just limited to making long distance calls. Due to the changes in technology, the reliance upon technological gadgets has increased. The capability to transform carbon dioxide into energy is a remarkable development which once established will change our dependence on limited and nonrenewable resources.

The computer technology has altered the face of the world. The internet that seeded from the concepts of computer networking has enhanced the mode of communication and increased the education standards. The use of this internet technology is increasing rapidly. It is one of the most effective platforms for communication and the largest base of information existing today. Due to the technological advancements, a person can gain access to information on any topic, from any place, at any time. Innovations in the present tech-world can enable us to find solutions to urgent and difficult problems. Furthermore, internet has brought a significant positive change to the advertising and entertainment industry. Marketers can reach out to the masses over the internet within seconds and carry out interactive and effective advertising campaigns.

The technology revolution has led to an increase in chat rooms, online databases and personalized web pages. The information technology sector has entirely transformed the outlook of communication with instant messaging, video conferencing and e-mails. With the dawn of technology, individuals are bridging gaps and decreasing the distances in their minds. However, the basic downside of technological advancement is that people have become too much machine dependent and thus are getting lethargic. Robotics, computerization and automation are changing our lives by increasing efficiency and inexpensive labor, thus increasing the rate of unemployment. It is curbing our capability to pay attention.

Technology has no doubt improved our lives and will keep on improving it if streamlined in right direction. It is our responsibility to structure it such that it benefits the society and environment rather than doing harming it. It is due the improvised technology that atomic and nuclear wars have taken place. This has also directed to an increase in corruption as well as pollution. For this reason, a balance between automation and manpower should be maintained.

Floor Plan Drafting Explained

!9#: Floor Plan Drafting Explained

Overview

Floor plan drafting is a service offered by drafting companies. There are two different types of floor plan drafting. The first is when a floor plan is drawn from scratch, for a proposed structure that someone would like to build on some future date. The second is when the floor plan of an existing structure is measured, and then drawn.

This article will only discuss the second type. When such drawings could be required, and what content would be included in such drawings, will be explained.

Defining Terms

Drafting is the craft or trade of drawing. The type of drawing that comes to my mind personally is technical drawing. In the AEC industry, plans are what is drawn. Plans are sometimes known as blueprints. However, nowadays drafting is done using CAD software, so the term blueprint is a bit out of date.

"Floor plan drafting", as it pertains to existing structures, is a term that refers to the process of a person visiting a structure in order to measure a floor plan with a hand held tape measure and a hand held laser distance measuring device. Then subsequently using CAD software to draft the floor plan from the measurements that were collected in the field.

The Need

Floor plans of existing structures could be required for many different reasons. Let's look at two hypothetical scenarios in order to better understand the demand for such drawings.

Consider for example if one were selling his apartment, and a potential buyer from across the world wanted to see the layout of the apartment, along with the associated number of square feet of living space. A floor plan of the apartment could provide the information needed to meet both of these requests.

Alternatively, consider if one owned a private home and wanted to enlarge his kitchen, complete with a new cabinet and appliance layout. Suppose he wanted to do so by demolishing a common wall and combining the existing kitchen with an adjacent room. In order to determine what type of cabinet and appliance layout would fit the new space, a floor plan of the two existing rooms would most likely be the starting point of the renovation project.

What Would Be Drafted?

In the past I have been asked, "What is normally included in a floor plan?" The answer to this question is as follows.

First, let's understand what the word "plan" means. The word "plan", or "plan view" as it is used in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry, is the top-down view of something. To better comprehend this, let's consider the first floor of a house as an example. A "plan view" of the first floor of a house would be a top-down view of it. The plan view would be the perspective of the floor as if a bird were hovering over it and looking down upon it.

Now, in regards to "What is normally included...". It would normally include the exterior walls, interior walls, window openings, door openings, stairs, bathroom fixtures and kitchen appliances. Also, on more complex floor plans, more information may be included, such as cabinetry, radiators, mechanical equipment, electrical outlets, switches, light fixtures, alarm panels, heating registers and et cetera.

In Closing

Floor plan drafting of existing structures could be required for many different reasons, and a drawing could include more or less information depending on what it would be used for. Nevertheless, as have been mentioned, there would be some basic elements that all floor plan drawings would contain.
